Deze arts werd als dienstplichtig Luitenant ter Zee uitgezonden naar Indië in 1947, waar hij aan de slag ging in het Marine Hospitaal te Soerabaja.
Description
Tijdens zijn studie geneeskunde in Nederland had hij al het nodige meegemaakt met de Duitse bezetter. In Soerabaja maakte hij kennis met tropische ziekten en in zijn eerste maanden op Chirurgie kwam hij van alles tegen.
Omdat het zo'n groot ziekenhuis was, kwamen alle "zware gevallen" zijn kant op. Velen stierven er aan hun verwondingen, maar ook enkelen bij gebrek aan goede medicatie. Ook vertelt deze arts over het gemis van zijn vrouw en kinderen.
