A patient’s experience with follicular lymphoma from diagnosis to cure: the life-changing impact of CAR T-cell therapy

This is attributable, in part, because she received CAR T-cell therapy in its earlier days before protocols were developed to treat and also mitigate common side effects. However, all her side effects from CAR T-cell therapy resolved, and her quality of life returned to her pre-infusion state within 3–4 months. By sharing her experience, Laurie aims to raise awareness for this life-saving and likely curative treatment across multiple audiences that may be impacted by FL, including patients, clinicians, families/caregivers, and advocates.</p> <p><b>What is this article about?</b></p> <p>This article is about a patient’s journey from cancer diagnosis to cure.

Laurie was diagnosed with follicular lymphoma (FL), a blood cancer, in 2006. FL is slow-growing and has historically been considered incurable. The goal of treating FL is usually to stabilize and stop the cancer from growing.

Laurie had 6 different treatments over 12 years, some of which left her with lifelong side effects. Though some treatments temporarily stabilized her disease, she required continuous treatment and her disease steadily worsened. In 2018, when Laurie was very sick and approaching kidney failure, she received her seventh and final treatment, called chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy.

This one-time treatment is made from a patient’s own T cells, a type of immune cell. The patient’s T cells are collected by blood sample and then modified in the laboratory to recognize and kill cancer cells. These CAR T cells are then infused back into the patient.

Within 1 month of Laurie receiving her CAR T cells, her cancer was gone.
