Edge-to-Cloud Heterogeneous Interaction Architecture for Structural Interoperability in Critical Industrial Olfactory Monitoring Networks

Listed in ZivaHub and Deakin Research Online — shown once because both records carry DOI 10.6084/m9.figshare.34029906.v2

Industrial olfactory monitoring networks are critical infrastructure in a narrow but consequential sense: their failure does not merely reduce data quality, it withdraws the evidential basis on which nuisance abatement and regulatory action depend.

Description

Yet the architectural question they pose has been answered only partially by the orchestration literature. That literature has established how to deploy and manage applications across a Cloud-to-Things continuum, and has produced resilient architectures with self-healing mechanisms demonstrated under overload and saturation.

What remains unresolved is placement: which interoperability functions belong at the edge, which at the cloud, and by what criterion. This article argues that the governing criterion is not data volume or computational cost but the temporal tolerance of the interaction contract attaching to each function the maximum deformation an exchange can sustain before its recipient can no longer reconstruct the observation.

From this principle we derive a five-plane architecture and a placement rule: functions whose contract tolerance is tighter than the round-trip latency to the cloud must execute at the edge, while functions whose tolerance is coarser must execute centrally, because placing semantic reconciliation at the edge fragments the correspondence space. We further specify a degradation ladder that preserves partial interoperability under link loss rather than collapsing to silence, and state four testable propositions.

The architecture's central claim is that resilience in critical environmental monitoring is a property of the placement rule, not of redundancy alone.
