CE16007 Transatlantic Added Value Survey (Galway to Saint John's, Newfoundland)

This research cruise is a survey that has been conducted annually since 2011 along a similar cruise track, with each year building on the body of work. The planned course intersects a persistent or persistently recurring eddy east of the Newfoundland Grand Banks at about 40W 48N.

This was the final cruise of a series of collaborative endeavours between the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundlandand National Univeristy of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) and completed a valuable dataset on warm core eddies. An eddy is a circular current of water that diverges from the general patterns of ocean flow. The circular motion of the eddy causes greater mixing of water in the eddy, which brings nutrients that would ordinarily be in deep waters up into shallower waters that light can reach.
