Dataset and reproducible workflow for inverse environmental prediction from Lestes sponsa wing morphology

Listed in figshare

This dataset provides the reproducibility materials supporting a secondary analysis of wing morphology in the damselfly Lestes sponsa.

Description

The study investigates whether environmental information can be recovered from morphology using an inverse-prediction framework.

The analysis uses previously published morphometric data from 17 European populations and CHELSA 1981–2010 climatological data.

Relative wing size, defined in the source dataset as wing centroid size divided by body size (head width), was evaluated as a low-dimensional morphological predictor of August climatological temperature.

Leave-one-population-out prediction showed substantial predictive association for both forewings (r = 0.780, MAE = 1.61 °C) and hindwings (r = 0.774, MAE = 1.63 °C). Predictive performance decreased under strict contiguous-latitude-block cross-validation, indicating that part of the recoverable signal is spatially structured.

Because August temperature is strongly correlated with latitude across the study populations, the results should not be interpreted as evidence for a temperature-specific causal code or as a literal biological thermometer.

This repository contains author-generated derived population-level data, held-out predictions, spatial cross-validation results, permutation-test outputs, analysis code, reproducibility documentation, and analysis-generated figures.

Primary third-party morphometric data and CHELSA raster products are not redistributed and should be obtained from their original sources.

The dataset accompanies the methodological study “Inverse prediction of environmental information from insect morphology: a technical demonstration using Lestes sponsa” and is intended to enable transparent inspection, reproduction, and extension of the inverse-prediction workflow.

Related preprint: Doijiri O.
