There has been significant research into coatings to replace Hard Chrome which has been used widely to provide wear resistance and corrosion protection to substrates.

Description

These have been produced using hexavalent chrome plating baths, which is carcinogenic and the use is controlled. Several alloys, and methods of production have been put forward as potential replacements such as cemented carbides deposited by thermal spray.

One of the alloy systems that has been researched is electrodeposited cobalt tungsten, which forms a nano-structured coating from a gluconate bath.

The cobalt tungsten alloys tested in this thesis have been produced from a gluconate bath, operated at 80 ᵒC with air agitation and a deposition current density of 2.7 Adm-2.

The improvement of the as deposited mechanical properties of the electrodeposited cobalt tungsten structures has been investigated by the use of conventional heat treatments which leads to the formation of Co3W, and this in turn causes through cracking of the coating which reduces the effectiveness of the corrosion protection offered.

This work aimed to characterise the effect of deep cryogenic treatment on electrodeposited Cobalt tungsten coatings, by treated a range of compositions and varied growth directions.

This treatment has been claimed to improve wear resistance for materials with a martensitic transformation, although the exact mechanisms for the transformation of retained austenite are still being researched. Once treated these were analysed using nano-indentation to obtain the hardness values, and X-Ray diffraction to determine if there was any structural change to the coating. It was found that for samples with greater than 15 % 100 orientation the cryogenic treatment reduced the hardness and the wear performance for the cryogenically treated samples was also reduced

As well as characterising the effect of cryogenic treatment the effect of aging the plating bath was investigated, this did not have a noticeable effect of the hardness of the deposit after 2 days of aging, but there was an increased level of the 100 orientation present for more of the coatings produced from the bath.

The wear comparison of these samples indicated that the higher the proportion of 101 growth was present in the sample the lower the wear volume of the scar.
