Refugee participation case study: the Shaba settlements in Zaire

This case study focuses on two of the three settlements created in 1985 for Angolan refugees in the Shaba region in Zaire.
Description
It looks at three aspects: the design of the settlements in ways consistent with the culture and characteristics of the refugee population; the use of a refugee representation system that closely resembles that used by the refugees when they were in Angola; and integration issues - including how the settlements will be administered in the long run, how health and education services will be maintained, and the need for the refugees to be better integrated into the larger economic system of the area.
