This dissertation is a study of the Irish music manuscript collection of Patrick O’Neill (1765-1832), housed at the National Library of Ireland, call number 44, 806/1-8.

Description

Its purpose is to illustrate the collection’s significance for Irish traditional music and to provide a critical edition of selected tunes from the manuscripts. The Introduction to Volume 1 presents an overview of Patrick O’Neill’s manuscript collection and his life, times and activities.

It explains methodology used and presents a literature review. Chapter 1 provides a historical and sociological backdrop and cultural overview of the time of compilation of these manuscripts. A biographical study places Patrick O’Neill in the social, cultural and political climate of his time and highlights the activities of musicians and collectors of his sort—middle-class, rural and from a Gaelic background—on the cusp of nineteenth-century Ireland.

It also shows how musical tastes and practices evolved over his lifetime. Chapter 2 is an examination of the manuscripts, a discussion of the repertoire and scribal activity therein and the characteristics of Irish music. Chapter 3 is an overview of sources for the tunes and analysis of the manuscripts as a source for the collector George Petrie.

Chapter 4 is a critical edition of selected tunes from the manuscripts, with a historical and music analysis of dance music and some important old Irish airs. It traces the evolution and dissemination of music from other traditions into the body of Irish traditional music and presents a previously unknown tune and new variants of old tunes. Chapter 5 is a discussion of the findings of the research and the significance of the manuscripts for Irish traditional music, with suggestions for future research.

Volume 2 presents a catalogue of the Patrick O’Neill collection, manuscript and print, together with an index of all manuscript items.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 July 2029.
