Alessandro Felisi's Herbarium (FER-FEL)

Listed in GBIF

The Herbarium of Alessandro Felisi, a doctor and florist from Ferrara, is the most significant historical collection within the University of Ferrara Herbarium.

Description

The Felisi Herbarium is the result of numerous personal collections (approx. 3,000 taxa) and collaborations with Italian and foreign botanists from the first half of the 19th century. The taxa collected and identified by Felisi represent the wild flora of the main habitats in the Ferrara area, although they also include plants cultivated in the University’s Botanical Garden and in various gardens (including his own).

Many specimens collected in the early 20th century by other botanists, in particular Pietro Revedin, Angelo Ferioli (author of contributions to Schedae ad Floram Italicam Exsiccatam), Caro Massalongo and Augusto Béguinot, subsequently became an integral part of the Herbarium. Following the most recent reorganisation and review in 2008, the Felisi collection now comprises a total of 9,214 specimens grouped into 53 bundles, divided by family.
