Currently [and/&] Emotion, the title shared by the creative and critical components of this interdisciplinary thesis, brings together two metonyms, the former indicating our current cultural and political moment, the latter its attendant concerns pertaining to issues of subjectivity and identity.
Description
The use of •emotion' (in lieu of'subjectivity', ‘identity' or any number of associated terms) is intended to underline the advocacy, throughout this study, of epistemologies that embrace affective response and the promotion of sharing, trust, responsibility, bodies and process over equivalent dominant values that include products, hierarchies and (ostensive) universality and impartiality.

Sited in the context of contemporary Anglophone poetry, this thesis aims to examine and subvert dominant perceptions of literary translation as rule-governed and uniquely interlingual, arguing that such a perception reduces our understanding of the process of translation and so too of representation.
Adopting Roman Jakobson's three categories of translation - intralingual, interlingual and intersemiotic - as a guiding conceptual and organisational principle, this thesis joins a creative component, an anthology of contemporary poetry translations, with a complementary critical component that seeks to name and propagate activist strategies of translation.

Beginning with intersemiotic translation, the first of this component's core chapters, ’§ Ekphrasis: "an ethics of seeing"', considers how the conventional ekphrastic dynamic, as informed by sexist formulations of Michel Foucault’s gaze, might be subverted through engagement with alternative strategies, source materials and contexts of reception.

The second core chapter, Equivocal Translation: "a performance of the act of reading"’, highlights the (neglected) potentiality of the intralingual form and offers ‘equivocal translation' as a term to describe translation strategies that avoid presenting fixed interpretations of the source text and defer instead to the hermeneutic capacities of the reader. The final core chapter, ‘oo Intimacy and Fidelity: "contracts to love”', discusses relationship models as they manifest within the interlingual translation dynamic, offering ’intimacy' as a viable alternative to the ubiquitous notion of'fidelity', and suggesting that the conceptual shift effected by the adoption of the former might enable us to move definitively away from what Gonzalo Aguilar has termed ‘possessive translation'.
In line with Denise Riley's assertion that language is the ‘the fiber of the personal’, the affective dimensions of my primary and secondary texts will be discussed as they become manifest. In conclusion, this thesis will consider responses to its creative component and the observations - pertaining to Jakobson's categories, and the relationship between poetry translation, affect and activism - that can be made with regards to the research completed throughout its three core chapters.
