The agency conducted this survey as a large-scale, controlled trial to assess the effects of different types of insurance on patient health and health care delivery, including both fee-for-service and health maintenance organization modes.

Description

This series contains survey data from 8,200 people in six locations: Dayton, Ohio; Seattle, Washington; Fitchburg, Massachusetts; Franklin County, Massachusetts; Charleston, South Carolina; and Georgetown County, South Carolina.

Each family was assigned to one of a number of insurance plans that varied by coinsurance rate, delivery mode, and maximum out-of pocket expenditure. This health and social survey contains detailed information on enrollee demographic and lifestyle information; the enrollee's use of health care services and state of health; insurance status; health care provider information; medical care, mental health services, and dental care visits; medical care costs and expenditures; and enrollee attitudes towards health care and insurance.
