The Araneae of the Grasslands of Zimbabwe

Listed in GBIF

Museum spider records from Zimbabwean grassland ecosystems constitute a significant long-term biodiversity dataset, documenting arachnid diversity across open savanna and grass-dominated landscapes from 1960 to the present.

Description

These records are derived from systematic and opportunistic collections conducted by museum staff, visiting researchers, and collaborating institutions, with a particular concentration of specimens originating from the Somabhula grasslands at Shangani, central Zimbabwe Funded by the JRS Biodiversity Foundation.

The Somabhula grasslands are recognised for their ecological heterogeneity, seasonal hydrological variability, and high invertebrate diversity, making them an important reference site for grassland arthropod studies. Specimens were collected using standard arachnological sampling techniques, including hand collecting, sweep netting, pitfall trapping, and litter sampling, and were preserved following established museum protocols.

Each specimen is accompanied by associated metadata, including locality, habitat description, collection date, and collector information, ensuring long-term scientific usability. All material is curated within the National Spider Collection housed at the Natural History Museum of Bulawayo, which serves as Zimbabwe’s principal repository for arachnological reference material. The dataset captures temporal patterns in species composition and distribution, providing a baseline for assessing ecological change related to land-use transformation, agricultural expansion, fire regimes, and climate variability in grassland systems.

The inclusion of historical records alongside recent collections enhances the value of the dataset for taxonomic revision, biogeographical analyses, conservation planning, and environmental impact assessments. In addition, these records contribute to broader regional and global biodiversity syntheses facilitating comparative research across southern Africa. By making these data openly accessible, the Natural History Museum of Bulawayo supports evidence-based conservation, , and promotes the continued documentation and understanding of Zimbabwe’s grassland spider fauna.
