Pacification Attitude Analysis System (PAAS) File

Listed in Harvard Dataverse

The agency used these data to plan and evaluate the pacification program and to provide general information about the program for use by intelligence and military personnel.

Description

Information policy makers, such as the Office of the Secretary of Defense, used the data as the basis for formulating policy alternatives, making major decisions, implementing policies, and interpreting Vietnamese public attitudes. This series contains monthly public opinion poll responses from Vietnamese interviewees in both rural and urban areas about the Vietnamese Conflict, Cambodian War, Pacification Program, economic conditions and other public issues.

There is one record for each respondent, and it includes basic demographic data and information regarding attitudes towards the government of South Vietnam and their military forces, Americans, allied troops, the Viet Cong, specific events such as the Cambodian Invasion and the My Lai massacre, and the respondent's life style. The records also include the interviewer's assessment of the respondent's credibility, confidence in the government of South Vietnam, and sympathy towards the Viet Cong.
