The agency conducted this study to gather data on the long-term effects of deinstitutionalization on the former residents of a hospital for the mentally handicapped.

Description

Its purpose was to provide federal and state officials with information to enable them to make better policy decisions regarding the processes of deinstitutionalization and continuing mental health services administration. This series contains data about the planning and implementation of the deinstitutionalization of the men tally handicapped and their relocation into the surrounding community.

This survey contains information on the residents, their families, quality of health care and environment, and cost-benefit analyses for the Pennhurst State School and Hospital in Pennsylvania.
