The Role of English as a Pivot Language in Multilingual Translation

Listed in figshare

Translation accuracy and consistency often vary widely, particularly when working with lesser-known or low-resource language pairs.

Description

This study investigates the effects of employing English as a pivot language in multilingual translation systems, employing a quantitative research methodology to derive insights from language translators. Data were collected from 340 language translators from 6 translation institutions in Southern Africa through a survey.

The data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results indicate that respondents generally perceived the use of English as a pivot language to be associated with higher perceived translation accuracy. The findings further suggest that, in multilingual institutional contexts where English functions as a dominant lingua franca, the use of English as a pivot language is associated with higher perceived translation consistency across diverse language pairs.

In addition, respondents reported comparatively higher levels of perceived user acceptance toward multilingual translation systems utilizing English as a pivot language. The findings also indicate that the use of English as a pivot language is perceived to support interoperability across diverse linguistic datasets in multilingual systems. However, the respondents also perceived that cultural biases embedded within English may influence cultural sensitivity in multilingual translation contexts.

The findings provide insights for multilingual translation practices in Southern Africa while offering implications for other multilingual contexts, including China, where English is widely employed as a pivot language.
