Vehicle Dimensions and Driver Anthropometry in Ecuador: Dataset for Roadway Design and Safety Analysis

Eye height estimates were calculated by combining vehicle seat height with anthropometric ratios. Standards from AASHTO and MTOP were used as reference benchmarks. Notable Findings -In several vehicle categories, measured eye heights are lower than those assumed in current roadway design guidelines. -Anthropometric variability between ethnic groups and sexes results in substantial differences (up to ~30 cm) in eye height, which can impact visibility and sight distance design. -Some vehicle models present geometric features (e.g., clearance, overhangs) that differ considerably from standard reference values, suggesting a need to revisit design assumptions for Ecuador’s vehicle fleet.

Interpretation and Use -The dataset allows researchers, transportation engineers, and policymakers to: -Compare real-world vehicle and driver dimensions with design standard assumptions. -Assess potential impacts of anthropometric diversity on road design and safety. -Support the development of updated, locally relevant design criteria. -Conduct simulations for sight distance, clearance, and ergonomics using percentile-based driver dimensions.
