Sugar-bearing energy plants (KF-705.3)

Listed in GBIF

Sugar-bearing energy crops at M.M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden are highly promising for bioethanol production due to their high carbohydrate content, drought resistance, and productivity.

Description

New varieties and hybrids of crops such as sweet sorghum, finger millet, Miscanthus, and sugar sorghum can produce 3–8 t/ha of ethanol, 60–80 t/ha of biomass, and 15–20 t/ha of dry matter, with sugar content of 8–25%. Some species, like finger millet, are widely cultivated in Africa, Asia, and the Americas for both grain and forage because of their deep root systems, disease resistance, and ability to withstand dry conditions.

The Botanical Garden has developed elite varieties like Yaroslava-8, Evhenia, Botanichnyi, Enerhodar, and Kolumbo, along with energy-efficient cultivation technologies for producing bioethanol, biodiesel, and solid biofuels, supporting Ukraine’s renewable energy development.
