Public Use Sample Data Files from the 16th Census of Population and Housing

The files were prepared to provide users with special needs the ability to prepare virtually any tabulation of the 1940 Census data they might have required, within the limits of sample size and geographic detail provided.

This series contains data files with representative samples of records from the 1940 census. It is a stratified 1-percent sample of households, with separate records for each household, for each "sample line" respondent, and for each person in the household. Household records include information about the location and composition of the household. "Sample line" records contain demographic characteristics of persons from the household sample identifying nativity, marital status, number of children, veteran status, wage deductions for social security, and occupation.
