The bookblock appears to have been attached to the leather cover at one point, the presence of leather tabs sewn at the head and tail end of the book suggests that the material was gathered and bound with the bookblock together.

Cardboard material has been used for a pasteboard, with the leather turn-ins made on top of the material. A foreedge flap and an envelope flap is present. A piece of textile was recycled, cut into a strip and sewn onto the bookblock.
Extra sewing was done at the head and tail end whereupon the material was attached to the cover. Link stitch sewing can be observed from th eobject, with the threads seemingly going through 4 sewing stations. The script is written in both red and black ink, with the former employed for titles, invocations for prayer as well as the mentioning of the name of God.
The text is bordered with a red, double-lined rectangular frame with parallel double-lineds running through the middle, whereupon the text sits. There is a prominent use of catchwords as the main ordering system for the pages. Recycled blank paper has been used as endleaves.

Each group is named after the village, town, or island where it is found.
The island of Ndau, at the northern end of the Lamu archipelago, Pate and Siyu villages on Pate Island, and Matondoni, a village on Lamu Island, are included in this list. The texts date from the late 18th century to the early 20th century and cover a wide range of subjects, including medicine and science, magic, poetry, agriculture, law, genealogy, and Sufism, among others. Some of the manuscripts are held in mosque libraries, while others are in private homes.
Among the unique objects in this collection are Quranic manuscripts produced in Siyu and mawlid texts from 18th-century Pate. These texts increase the Swahili corpus available from this early time period. TIFF files High-quality TIFF images are available for researchers upon request.
