Replication Data for: Figs 18.1 through 18.7, GPDs, Comm nurse, 23 June 2026

Listed in data.InDoRES

Description

Kinship is the kinship of juvenile that nurses aboveground to mother that nurses All data are from the following two GPD colonies at Valles Caldera National Preserve: (a) Redondo Meadow Colony (RMC) in 2013 through 2016 and (b) Visitor Center Colony from 2017 through 2018 Note well: Some PEFO times from 1989-1993 are from early am rather than early evening. RR54 (eartag 693) in 2014 is the SAME FEMALE as 54 (eartag 693) in 2015.

This female with eartag 693 is the ONLY GPD female that nursed aboveground in >=2 years. This file has been checked by JLH alone on 18 Nov 2019, and again on 10 Dec 2019 For kinship, OFF = offspring All date in this file are from ABOVEGROUND nursing's, No info on underground nursing's in any year--except in a few cases when nursing mother and nursing juvenile evidently nursed underground after starting aboveground. Underground nursing immediately after aboveground nursing was more common among UPDs.

No data from RMC in 2013 because of fire in May and June. Note on 04 June 2022: Note that this file includes a few MULTIPLE OBSERVATIONS from the same female in the same year. See note above about RR4 (eartag 693) in 2014 who nursed aboveground in two consecutive years.

RR4 is the only known GPD female who nursed aboveground in two or more ease. Another OLD File name = GPDs, Comma nurse, final copy, 21 Sept 2020 I assumed that I checked this file TWO TIMES AT CREATION I created this file for article in BES about UPD communal nursing Start time = time when aboveground nursing started Time of 6.50 means halfway between 6pm and 7pm, for example Time of 6.88 means 88% of time between 6pm and 7pm Time of 7.75 means 75% of time between 6pm and 7pm Year = year when aboveground nursing occurred Dates shown here are Julian dates.

Julian date of copulation = 71 = 12 March, for example. Date = Julian date when aboveground nursing of own or alien offspring occurred Dates shown here are Julian dates. Julian date of copulation = 71 = 12 March, for example.

Julian date of first emergence of juveniles from natal burrow entrance = 145 = 25 May, for example. Julian date of parturition = 84 = March 25, for example. These Julian data are for NON-LEAP years.

Julian dates for leap years after 28 February differ by 1 day. Duration = duration of time in MINUTES over which aboveground nursing occurred Sex =M = Male, and Sex = F = Female Age of juvenile that nursed aboveground (days) = number of days since juvenile first emerged from natal nursery-burrow Communal nursing = 0 = mother nursed OWN OFFSPRING = NO nursing of alien offspring Communal nursing = 1 = mother nursed ALIEN OFFSPRING = Good case of communal nursing Kinship = verbal description of kinship between nursing mother and nursing offspring R-value = coefficient of genetic relatedness to descript kinship between nursing mother and nursing offspring Juveniles nursed at same time = maximum number of different juveniles nursing from the same mother at the same time Some nursing juveniles were offspring of the nursing mother, but others were offspring of a different mother = communal nursing.

For several analyses, I considered data from the UPD mothers and juveniles on the same day of the same year to be independent. Examples of the latter include time of day, duration, and submerge. Blank cell or period <.> means no data or missing data.

UNX = Unx = Unmarked GPD juvenile that nursed aboveground for which I have no information on kinship between nursing mother and nursing offspring. Date = 02 Jan 2020. Final corrections made on 02 Jan 2020.

This file has been checked by JLH alone on 18 Nov 2019, and again on 10-11 Dec 2019, and then again on 19 Dec 2019 No data from RMC in 2013 because of Thompson Ridge Fire in May and June. Note well: Some PEFO times from 1989-1993 are from early am rather than early evening. Unless otherwise noted with "am", all other start times were in pm.

RR54 (eartag 693) in 2014 is the SAME FEMALE as 54 (eartag 693) in 2015. I think that female with eartag 693 is the ONLY female known to nurse aboveground in >=2 years. Nursing aboveground in different years was more common among UPDs.

GPD Redondo Meadow Colony (RMC, studied in 2013 through 2016) was at Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP). GPD Visitor Center Colony (VCC, studied in 2017 and 2018) was also at VCNP. GPD colony at Petrified Forest National Park (PEFO) was studied from 1989 through 1995.

Note that this file includes MULTIPLE OBSERVATIONS within the same from the same mothers. and the same juveniles. These data used for Figs 18.1 through 18.7 in Hoogland 2026. This file ready for longterm storage on 27 March 2025.

I considered data from the same prairie dog mother in different years to be independent. Note well: I did NOT use military time (24-hour time) for records of start times. File name = Figs 18.1 through 18.7, GPDs, Comm nurse, 23 June 2026
