Characterization of the eletro-optical response response by semiconductor optical amplifiers - raw data and automation software: supplementary material, article submitted to SBrt 2026

Listed in REDU - Unicamp Institutional Research Data Repository

The present work proposes an algorithm for the experimental characterization of semiconductor optical amplifiers.

Description

The algorithm accounts for spectral leakage arising from the fast Fourier transform (FFT) in the SOAs’ electro-optic response. Measurements were carried out with arbitrary frequencies (not accounting for spectral leakage), with consideration of the oscilloscope sampling rate and record length (accounting for spectral leakage), and, finally, using an electrical signal analyzer.

Using the investigated technique, a significant reduction in the discrepancy between the measurements obtained with the two instruments was demonstrated when the effect of spectral leakage was taken into account. The algorithm developed in Python using the SCPI (Standard Commands for Programmable Instruments) protocol is provided for the control of sinusoidal-signal generation and acquisition. The data measured using the proposed technique are also made available.

Although this algorithm is intended for the experimental characterization of SOAs, it can obviously be applied to the characterization of other electro-optic devices, such as lasers and modulators. The .h5 files correspond to the FFT data acquired with the oscilloscope. In total, there are four files.

The files whose names contain the term "SOA" refer to the measurements of the electro-optical response of the semiconductor optical amplifiers. In contrast, the files whose names do not contain "SOA" correspond to the back-to-back configuration. In addition, the files containing the term "coherent" in their names correspond to data acquired without spectral leakage.

Conversely, the files without the term "coherent" refer to data measured with spectral leakage. Each file contains 500 traces, with 524,289 samples per trace, resulting in a data matrix with dimensions (500, 524289). For the FFT processing, n_fft = 1048576 was used, with a sampling frequency of fs = 160 GHz and a bin width of 152,587.890625 Hz.
