Snow cover monitoring data of Landsat 8/9 in Himalayas from 2013 to 2025

Listed in ScienceDB

The spatiotemporal evolution of snow cover in the Himalayas is a critical factor influencing regional climate responses and modulating downstream water resources.

Description

High-resolution snow cover data are essential for constructing analysis-ready datasets in this region. Unlike the central and eastern sections, which are predominantly influenced by the summer monsoon, the western Himalayas are primarily affected by the westerly winds and associated Western Disturbances.

As the first gateway for moisture input from the westerlies, snow accumulation in the western section occurs mainly during winter. The resulting meltwater constitutes a major source of runoff for large rivers such as the Indus, directly impacting irrigation security for regional agriculture, particularly Rabi crops like winter wheat. This data update expands upon the previous coverage of the central and eastern Himalayas (2013–2020) by incorporating new observations from the western sector, thereby establishing a comprehensive, high-resolution snow cover dataset spanning the entire Himalayan range.

This enhanced dataset enables detailed investigations into the differential impacts of the westerly circulation and monsoon systems across varying elevations and topographic conditions, providing robust data support for precise hydrological forecasting and climate change assessments. The current update specifically augments the western Himalayan region with an additional 388 Landsat 8 scenes covering the period from 2013 to 2020, extending the temporal coverage through December 2025.

Furthermore, 958 high-quality imagery scenes acquired between 2021 and 2025 have been incorporated, comprising 579 Landsat 8 and 379 Landsat 9 scenes.Methodologically, Version 3 (V3) adheres to the same technical workflow as earlier versions: snow identification is performed using Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification, followed by rigorous quality control integrating auxiliary geographic information such as rivers, lakes, and glacial lakes.

This meticulous classification protocol and post-processing pipeline ensure that V3 maintains exceptionally high accuracy and reliability while significantly expanding data volume.
