Since 2014, Wissenschaft im Dialog has been using the Science Barometer to collect representative data on the attitudes of citizens in Germany toward science and research on an annual basis.
Description
The Science Barometer questionnaire includes questions on the respondents´ interest, awareness, and information-seeking behavior with regard to topics related to science and research. It also gathers information on attitudes toward trust, the assessment of the benefits and risks of science, and the social role of research.
In some cases, questions also focus on specific areas of research or technologies, or, on an annual basis, on current developments in science and the public sphere. The project is sponsored and supported by the Carl Zeiss Foundation, the Klaus Tschira Foundation, and the Fraunhofer Society. The results of the 2025 Science Barometer are based on 2,011 web-based interviews (CAWI) conducted by Verian on behalf of Wissenschaft im Dialog between July 4 and 18, 2025.

The population consists of the 158,000 German panel members of the Payback Online Access Panel, which is recruited from the 34 million German Payback customers. From the members of the standing panel, the persons to be interviewed were selected on the basis of a quota draw along the two-stage distribution of the characteristics of age and gender, school education, and federal state. A current focus of the 2025 survey was on questions about the perception and assessment of polarization in Germany.
