Feminism, feeling and form in women's short stories from Ireland
Listed in ZivaHub and Deakin Research Online and DMU Figshare — shown once because both records carry DOI 10.17034/32805050.v1
This thesis examines the relationship between the short story’s affective power and the sociological backdrop of political activism and change for women in Ireland between 2006 and 2022.
Description
Chapter One situates the selected writers within their historical and literary contexts, tracing the short story’s feminist genealogy across Ireland. Chapter Two explores representations of lesbianism, focusing on the stigma and silencing that frame same-sex relationships as transient “bubbles of joy” (Caldwell, 2016: 114).
Chapter Three analyses depictions of “unapologetic” abortions (Cullen and Korolczuk, 2019: 15), arguing that empathetic dialogue is vital to bridging divides between ostracised women and their communities while provoking reflection among readers. Chapter Four investigates portrayals of gendered violence, suggesting that testimony functions as a crucial mode of healing for individual victim-survivors. The final chapter turns to depictions of the female migrant, addressing issues of communication, isolation, and racism, and revealing how expectations of assimilation persist.

Across the thesis, feminist reimaginings of female community are examined through the short story’s form. The genre’s brevity and placement within anthologies or magazines enable it to provoke emotional and intellectual dialogue beyond the page. The most significant connection lies between story and reader, who are invited to listen with a “feminist ear” (Ahmed, 2021).
These narratives aim to affect readers, prompting emotional realignment and inspiring acts of “wilfulness” (Ahmed, 2014). Ultimately, this project underscores the short story’s role in feminist activism and its capacity to challenge and reshape societal mindsets in contemporary Irish literature.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 December 2026.
