Benefit Per Ton (BPT) and Co-benefit Estimates of Air Pollution Emission Reductions in the United States and Canada

The BPTs were estimated using the CMAQ adjoint version 5.0 and calculated as the valuations of premature mortality counts due to exposure to fine particulate matter resulting from emissions of one tonne of a pollutant (primary PM2.5, NOx, SO2, and NH3).

Our BPTs estimates, while accounting for a large portion of societal impact, due not include morbidity, acute exposure mortality, or chronic exposure mortality due to exposure to other pollutants such as ozone. We used BPTs to provide location-specific and sectoral estimates for co-benefits of reducing CO2 emissions from a range of combustion sources. Co-benefit estimates rely heavily on the emission characteristics of the sector, and therefore exhibit more pronounced sectoral fingerprints than BPTs.
