Understanding children born preterm: Educational Psychologists’ knowledge and practice
Listed in ZivaHub and Deakin Research Online and DMU Figshare — shown once because both records carry DOI 10.17034/33476290.v1

Children born preterm (before 37 weeks’ gestation) face an elevated risk of cognitive, behavioural and educational challenges.
Description
Despite this, educational professionals reported limited understanding of these developmental implications. Moreover, little is known about the level of knowledge held by Educational Psychologist (EP) professionals regarding the development of children born preterm or how targeted professional learning might enhance knowledge.
This thesis therefore investigates EP professionals’ knowledge regarding children born preterm and evaluates an e-learning intervention designed to improve knowledge.

A two-stage explanatory-sequential mixed methods design was employed. Stage one assessed baseline knowledge using the Preterm Birth Knowledge Scale (PBKS) among Qualified EPs, Assistant EPs, and Trainee EPs. Quantitative analysis revealed significant group differences, with qualified EPs scoring higher than AEPs and TEPs, although overall knowledge was lower than reported in previous literature.

The PRISM e-learning intervention was evaluated using a randomised controlled trial (experimental n=32; control n=29). A mixed factorial ANOVA found a significant Group x Time interaction, with the experimental group showing significantly greater increases in knowledge compared to minimal change in the control group. Stage two involved focus groups that were analysed using Reflexive Thematic Analysis.
Four themes were generated to explore participants’ experiences of the intervention.

Findings indicate that EP professionals recognise the importance of understanding the developmental risks faced by children born preterm, though both objective measures and self-reports suggest that their knowledge is variable and could be strengthened to better inform EP practice. The PRISM intervention effectively improved participants’ knowledge, highlighting its potential as a targeted professional development tool.
The thesis concludes by discussing implications for EP practice, professional learning, and recommendations for future research.
