<p>Basal activity and prolonged challenge and recovery in a heterogeneous population.</p>

<p>The data here show a 100 neuron heterogeneous population following the same protocols as <a href="ploscompbiol.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pcbi.1014832#pcbi.1014832.g004" target="_blank">Fig 4</a>. The inset distribution shows the heterogeneous input rates and the colour coded example neurons. In the left hand plots, with default synthesis scaling <i>s</i>_<i>r</i> = 1.1, the heterogeneous population sustains a stable reserve store at basal activity (1 pg/ml plasma vasopressin).

The majority of the secretion is from the more active neurons (red) and these show gradual increase of individual neuron stores. In the right hand plots, the challenge and recovery protocol shows similar results to the single neuron (<a href="ploscompbiol.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pcbi.1014832#pcbi.1014832.g004" target="_blank">Fig 4</a>), but with a more stable and linear plasma signal. The individual neurons show some complex divergence in their store recovery, due to varied non-linearities in secretion and synthesis.
