Replication Data for: UPDs, Duration of Resmale residency, 29 July 2026

Listed in data.InDoRES

Description

This file has been checked ONE TIME ONLY With no hint of statistical significance for any analysis, I will not bother to check a second time for possible avoidance of daughter by father Length of UPD Resmale residency = number of consecutive years that same UPD adult male (Res male) remained in same breeding territory Note that this definition does NOT include sexually immature yearling males that were still in natal territory.

Resmale = Sexually active/mature male in a breeding (nonnatal) territory Year = year when residency of prairie dog Resmale in breeding territory began Breeding territory = territory in which prairie dog male copulated If a yearling female was in a territory was in a territory where a male lived the previous year when sexually active, then I scored that female as a "Possible daughter in year-2"--even if I did not see the male copulate with the yearling female's mother.

BUT, I did not score a "Definite cop" unless I saw the male copulate with the yearling female's mother in the previous year--so that father-daughter incest was likely Data for "Definite cop" were underestimates--because I probably missed several copulations with yearling female's mother and yearling female's father. If I have no good information on whether a male copulated with >=1 female in his home territory in year-1, I scored his Definite cop as missing data = <.> Cop = copulate or copulation Microsats = microsatellites, which helped Steve Keller, Regina Trott, and me to assign maternities and paternities.

UPD microsats were less reliable than microsats for GPDs and WTPDs; see Chapters 19 and 20 for details. Consequently, determinations of father-daughter kinships were not as reliable for UPDs. These data used for Fig 22.5 in Hoogland 2026.

This file ready for longterm storage on 21 April 2025. All durations/lengths are in YEARS This EXCEL file checked on 21 April 2025 and 24 July 2026. Notice corrections below made on 24 July 2026.

A UPD Resmale was >=1 year old, was sexually active/mature, and had emerged from the natal burrow- entrance >=9 months ago. ARS = Annual Reproductive Success OR = original resident = prairie dog at study-colony in first year of research. I had no information on age or past ARS for ORs.

Some daughters = 0 Some daughters in year-2 = 0 = NO possible daughters remained in territory from first year until 2nd year Some daughters in year-2 = 1 = >=1 possible daughters remained in territory from first year until 2nd year Length of Resmale's residency = number of years that sexually mature male remained in the same breeding territory. Note that this definition does NOT include sexually immature yearling males that were still in the natal territory.

Age = number of years since first emergence from natal burrow entrance. Sample sizes for each species are in labels along x-axis. All UPD data in this figure are from Resmales that lived at study colony for at least 2 years.

Numbers below the x-axis indicate the number of males, and some long-lived males showed a length of male residency in more than one breeding territory. Important note here for all four species: Short duration of a single year in this EXCEL file and Fig 22.5 did NOT result from early death of male--because all males in in this EXCEL file and Fig 22.5 lived for at least 2 years. If no data from microsats, I verified that resident male copulated with mother whose daughter did or did not survive until the second year File name = UPDs, Duration of Resmale residency, 29 July 2026 MAJOR UPD PROBLEM DISCOVERED FOR FIG 22.5 ON 24 JULY 2026.

Following are the necessary changes: 1) UPD frequency when duration = 1 should be 99. 2) UPD frequency when duration = 2 should be 37. 3) UPD frequency when duration >=3 should be 7. Total number of UPD durations of Resmales should be 143. The main text of book needs the following correction on Page 410, Right side, 6-7 lines from bottom: “…single mating season, and for utahs the percentage was 69.2% (99/143).” This correction uses new numbers, but the new percentage is almost identical to the old percentage--69.2 (new) vs 69.6 (old) If Prairie Dogs: Ecology and Social Behavior ever has a 2nd edition, I will incorporate the corrections and changes summarized here regarding Fig 22.5.

ARS = Annual Reproductive Success OR = Original Resident = prairie dog at study-colony in first year of research. I had no information on age or past ARS for ORs. File name = UPDs, Duration of Resmale residency, 29 July 2026
