Description

This file has now been checked TWO TIMES, once by JLH alone, once by JLH + Judy Coterie size or Clan size = size of coterie or clan in year-X for dispersing prairie dog in year-X. Coterie size or Clan size = number of adults and yearlings living in the same coterie or clan territory in MAY Coterie size or Clan size = coterie or clan size of disperser's or non-disperser's natal coterie or clan when disperser or nondisperser was a YEARLING--i.e., NOT the clan size when disperser or nondisperser was a weaned juvenile Coterie size or clan size = coterie or clan size from list of clan compositions Note, however, that YEAR in this EXCEL file is year of birth, when prairie dog was a weanling.

Species = 1 = BTPDs; 2 = GPDs; 3 = UPDs, and 4 = WTPDs NCTYRL = 1 = still in natal coterie/clan territory as yearling = no dispersal = philopatry. I do NOT use NCTYRL designation in this EXCEL file. NCTYRL = 0 = NOT still in natal coterie/clan territory as yearling = dispersal = no philopatry.

I do NOT use NCTYRL designation in this EXCEL file. Mother = 1 = mother still in natal clan territory Mother = 0 = mother NOT still in natal clan territory Sisters = number of littermate sisters still in natal clan territory as yearlings Brothers = number of littermate brothers still in natal clan territory as yearlings The number of littermate brothers or littermate sisters in the same natal coterie territory or natal clan territory was often 0.

NCT = natal clan territory (GPDs, UPDs, and WTPDs) or natal coterie territory (BTPDs) Sex = 1 = male, Sex = 2 = female Natal dispersal = 0 = disperser = yearling that DID disperse away from natal clan territory Natal dispersal = 1 = NONdisperser = yearling that DID NOT disperse away from natal territory. Dog = number of prairie dog for SYSTAT analyses, for my convenience. IGNORE THIS NUMBER FOR ALL STATISTICAL ANALYSES.

In combination with year, Dog is unique for each prairie dog of each species because I only scored dispersal ONE TIME for each yearling To reduce confusion for WTPDs among GPDs at VCNP and WTPDs at ANWR, I included variable = PD eartag OLD File name = Dispersal vs nearby kin, 01 July 2019 Note on 06 July 2019. This file through case 1870 includes all data for WTPDs, Early checks for most of this file were in 2012, for Science article (Hoogland 2013) about dispersal.

New data added on 08 July 2019. These data are from RMC and VCC of VCNP. These data now checked TWO TIMES--once by JLH alone, once with Judy On 09 July 2019, I notice that three lines of UPD data (species = 3) were listed as GPD data (species = 2).

The lines were 1377, 1378, and 1470. I change all three cases to species = 3. This will affect the UPD and the GPD stats.

Note that the GPD stats now include data from VCNP's RMC and VCNP's VCC. As noted above, the numbers in Column-D (from an old SYSTAT FILE) are for convenience only. OLD File name = BGUW, All Dispersal, 07 June 2021 The SYSTAT output from this EXCEL file is IDENTICAL to output form 10 July 2019.

Note immediately above says that I checked everything on 09 July 2019. But note: New variable in this file includes Age of natal dispersal Data for these last two variables come from File = BGUW, Dispersal vs age, 04 June 2021 See note immediately below for OLDFilename = BGUW, Dispersal vs age, 04 June 2021 I pasted data from File name = BGUW, Dispersal vs age, 04 June 2021 into THIS EXCEL file Note that the older files and Hoogland 2013 (Science) did NOT have GPD data from RMC or VCC colonies.

In SYSTAT, I will create variable = DISPEVER = Dispersal ever = 1 - natal dispersal. Natal dispersal = 0 = disperser = yearling that DID disperse away from natal clan territory Natal dispersal = 1 = NONdisperser = yearling that DID NOT disperse away from natal territory. Dispever = 0 means that the prairie dog never dispersed Dispever = 0 means that the prairie DID disperse at some time in its life, at any age To make Fig 22.2, I added the numbers from Fig 22.3, and converted the sums into percentages.

So, I will use variable = Dispever to make histogram of whether prairie of either sex ever dispersed vs species And I will use variable = Nctlife to make histogram of prairie dogs of either sex remained in NCT or life I do NOT use Nctlife designation in this EXCE: file Note well: No data for LAST YEAR of research at every study-colony, because obviously we could not track dispersal in the year after the last year for any study colony Last year for BTPDs with JLH at WCNP was 1988 (I do not use BTPD data from Loughry only in 1989) in 1989); last year for GPDs at PEFO was 1995; last year for UPDs at BCNP was 2005; last year for WTPDs at ANWR was 2012 (I do not use WTPD data from my Ph.D. research of 1974-1976); last year for GPDs at RMC was 2016; and last year for GPDs at VCC was 2018 Year = year when prairie dog was born---NOT year when prairie dog was scored for dispersal as yearling OLD File name = BGUW, Dispersal vs age, 04 June 2021 I created this file from SYSTAT file = Disperse.sys, which I created on 13 Oct 2011 Note in hard copy says that I checked this file through case 1844 THREE TIMES.

But this file has 1845 cases. Where the difference of 1? Below I fix this discrepancy by adding data from GPD female-H4, Q21, born in 2015.

OLD File name is now BGUW, ALLdispersal, 05 July 2021 On 06 July 2021, I verify that I have entered dispersal data FOR EVERY GPD in our GPD litter summaries for RMC and VCC. I needed to add a few GPDs that I had missed when I created the file. Remember: No data from 2016, because that was my last year at RMC.

And no data from 2018, because that was my last year at VCC. ` Blank cell for Age of dispersal means no data for possible dispersal beyond natal dispersal--because I could not determine if older prairie dog dispersed or died. On 09 July 2021, I checked WTPD data for Mother, Sisters, and Bros, and I make ONE CHANGE Born in 2010, 3SBS (F55) had one brother (male-33) On 19 April 2025, I change sex of Q61, H4, in 2015 from H4 to 2 = female.

This change changes number of females scored as dispersers or non-dispersers from 423 to 424. GPD Redondo Meadow Colony (RMC, studied in 2013 through 2016) was at Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP). GPD Visitor Center Colony (VCC, studied in 2017 and 2018) was also at VCNP.

GPD colony at Petrified Forest National Park (PEFO) was studied from 1989 through 1995. WTPDs (studied in 2006 through 2012) lived at the single study-colony at the Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) near Walden, Colorado Litter size = litter size at first emergence of offspring from their natal nursery-burrow = number of weanlings. Yearlings = number of weanlings that survive for >= 9 months after first emergence These data used for Fig 22.1 in Hoogland 2026.

This file ready for longterm storage on 19 April 2025. Male here! under Comments are for prairie dogs for which early summaries indicated sex = female. All sexes in this EXCEL and Figs 22.1 and 22.2 file are correct.

File name = Figs 22.1, 22.2, BGUW, ALL natal dispersals, 29 July 2026 Minor GPD problem discovered on 29 July 2026 for Fig 22.2. Following is the necessary change 1) Page 408, Left side, Fig 22.2. The percentage for GPD males should be 38.16% rather than 39.14%.

This small change means no other changes necessary for Main Text, Legend to Fig 22.2, or sample sizes for Fig 22.2. 2) If Princeton University Press ever publishes a revision or 2nd edition of Hoogland 2026, Prairie Dogs: Ecology and Social Behavior, I will try to incorporate this small change. MAJOR UPD PROBLEM DISCOVERED ON 26 JULY 2026 for Fig 22.11. Following are the necessary changes: 1) Sample size for UPDs should be 444 (instead of 380). 2) Percentage of all UPD dispersers that dispersed in groups should be 69/444 = 15.54% (instead of 69/380 = 18.2%) 3) NO CHANGE necessary for Main Text. 4) If Princeton University Press ever publishes a revision or 2nd edition of Hoogland 2026, Prairie Dogs: Ecology and Social Behavior, I will try to incorporate these changes.

MAJOR UPD PROBLEM DISCOVERED ON 24 JULY 2026 for Fig 22.5. Following are the necessary changes: 1) UPD frequency when duration = 1 should be 99. 2) UPD frequency when duration = 2 should be 37. 3) UPD frequency when duration >=3 should be 7. 4) Total number of UPD durations of Resmales should be 143. 5) The main text of book needs the following correction on Page 410, Right side, 6-7 lines from bottom: “…single mating season, and for utahs the percentage was 69.2% (99/143).” 6) This correction uses new numbers, but the new percentage is almost identical to the old percentage-- --69.2% (new) vs 69.6% (old) 7) If Princeton University Press ever publishes a revision or 2nd edition of Hoogland 2026, Prairie Dogs: Ecology and Social Behavior, I will try to incorporate these changes.
