Tactical Information Deposit and Retrieval System (TINDERS) Files

Listed in Harvard Dataverse

The agency created TINDERS to store and retrieve tactical military intelligence data from various sources, including ground units, air observers, prisoners of war, and infrared sensors.

Description

It used these data to plan tactics, plot and describe enemy concentrations, list incidents of a similar nature, and describe friendly troop movements and action in response. This series contains records of small unit combat actions reported in the Corps Tactical Zone of the Third Marine Amphibious Force (II I MAP) during the Vietnam War.

There are seven types of records: targets, helicopter landing zones, mines and booby traps, antiaircraft incidents, artillery fire missions, naval gunfire missions, and friendly aircraft missions. The data include the type of record, reporting unit, location of incident, date (year, month, and day), the time of day, and specialized information according to the type of record. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC).
