Rate-dependent corneal biomechanics during Corvis ST air-puff loading

Listed in ScienceDB

This dataset contains experimental and finite element simulation data generated to investigate the rate-dependent mechanical behavior of the human cornea under uniaxial tensile loading and Corneal Visualization Scheimpflug Technology (Corvis ST) air-puff loading.

Description

Human corneal stromal lenticules were obtained from 20 patients who underwent small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) surgery at ShanXi Aier Eye Hospital, Taiyuan, China.

A total of 40 corneal lenticules were collected, from which 80 superior–inferior strip specimens were prepared. The specimens were allocated to four strain-rate groups, with 20 specimens per group, and subjected to uniaxial tensile testing at strain rates of 0.001, 0.1, 0.5, and 1 s-1. Nominal stress was calculated from the measured tensile force and estimated undeformed cross-sectional area, while axial strain was determined using digital image correlation.Preoperative Corvis ST examinations were performed in both eyes of the 20 participants, yielding 40 recordings.

Frame-by-frame deflection-amplitude (DA) data were used to calculate the mean DA waveform and corresponding standard deviation. The experimental tensile and Corvis ST data were further combined with a fiber-reinforced viscoelastic constitutive model and whole-eye finite element simulations to characterize corneal deformation under transient air-puff loading. The dataset provides source data supporting the quantitative results presented in the associated study, including mean and standard deviation of nominal stress–strain responses at four strain rates, experimental Corvis ST DA data, best-fit and comparison finite element DA curves, stored-energy components and their relative contributions during air-puff loading, the load-bearing fiber activation factor, and DA curves obtained from the full and reduced viscoelastic models.

These data support the evaluation of matrix–fiber mechanical interactions, rate-dependent viscoelasticity, and the contribution of equilibrium and non-equilibrium constitutive branches to corneal deformation during Corvis ST testing.
