Climatic suitability projections of polar lichens under current and future climate scenarios

Listed in ScienceDB

This dataset contains spatially explicit climatic suitability projections generated for polar lichens using ensemble species distribution modelling.

Description

The raster layers represent predicted climatic suitability for different functional groups of polar lichens under current and future climate scenarios. The dataset was generated to evaluate how functional traits, including thallus pigmentation and growth form, influence potential distributional responses of polar lichens under climate change.

Lichen occurrence records were obtained from a trait-attributed global lichen dataset and included georeferenced observations from polar regions. Six functional groups were considered based on thallus colour (pale, bright, and dark) and growth form (crustose, foliose, and fruticose).Environmental predictors used for suitability modelling were derived primarily from WorldClim v2.1 climatic datasets. Current climatic conditions represent the 1970–2000 baseline period, while future projections represent four Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) scenarios (SSP1–2.6, SSP2–4.5, SSP3–7.0, and SSP5–8.5) for the 2050s and 2090s.The projections cover two polar regions:Arctic regionAntarctic regionSpatial analyses were conducted within terrestrial domains after excluding permanently ice-covered areas.

For Antarctica, permanent ice-covered areas were identified using MODIS MOD09A1 V6.1 eight-day composite imagery. Annual mean normalized difference snow index (NDSI) and the number of snow-covered days were derived, and pixels with more than 360 snow-covered days per year and an annual mean NDSI >0.95 were classified as permanently ice-covered and excluded. For the Arctic, permanent land ice in Greenland was excluded using the NSIDC MEaSUREs Greenland Ice Mapping Project (GIMP) Land Ice and Ocean Classification Mask, Version 1.The normalized difference snow index (NDSI) was calculated from MODIS green band (Band 4, 545–565 nm) and shortwave-infrared band (Band 6, 1628–1652 nm):NDSI=((Band4-Band6))/((Band4+Band6))Data contentsThe dataset includes GeoTIFF raster files representing:Current and future climatic suitability projectionsSuitability change layers, including:habitat gainhabitat lossnet suitability changeSpatial masks defining accessible terrestrial analysis domainsLatitude and elevation redistribution layers The projections are provided separately for each polar region and lichen functional group:Growth formscrustosefoliosefruticoseColour typespalebrightdark
