Data characterizing alternative overwintering strategies of the alder bark beetle

Listed in Borealis

Description

Abstract

This dataset describes two distinct overwintering strategies of the alder bark beetle, Alniphagus aspericollis, in red alder, Alnus rubra. These data were used to evaluate the fitness trade-offs associated with either overwintering strategy: overwintering as mature larvae in the main stems (i.e., boles) of host trees, or as adult beetles within branch nodes. Data were collected from four sites in southwestern British Columbia, Canada.

Methods

Data for evaluating the frequency of Beauveria on branch-versus bole-overwintering alder bark beetles were obtained by isolating fungi from the exoskeletons of emergent adult beetles from both overwintering cohorts. Data for assessing adult body size and feeding status in relation to overwintering cohort, sex, and season were acquired through the measurement and dissection of emergent beetles.
