The Reptile and Amphibian World Collection of the Science Museum, University of Coimbra, Portugal

This dataset presents the fully revised and digitized reptile and amphibian collection, a major resource for understanding the herpetofauna of former Portuguese overseas territories, particularly from the 19th and early 20th centuries. This collection comprises 585 records, representing 643 specimens in total, with 505 (86%) identified to species or genus level.

The dataset includes material from Europe (209 records), Africa (142 records), South America (93 records) and Asia (67 records). Specimens were collected mainly between the 19th century and the mid-20th century, with recent entries from 2015. A comprehensive digitization and revision project, initiated in 2012 and updated in 2025, produced a standardized inventory with new unique catalog numbers and taxonomic identifications revised against nomenclatural authorities, primarly AmphibiaWeb and The Reptile Database.
