Cumberpatch ZA, Finch E, Kane IA, et al., Basin Research, 2021. Movies of model evolution

Listed in University of Manchester figshare

These movies introduce results from experiments that investigate the effect of sedimentation rate on diapir growth and halokinetic modulation.

Description

Six experiments are shown: a baseline zero sedimentation model (M1) and five models with variable sedimentation rates and patterns, slow (M2), intermediate (M3) and fast (M4) rates. Experiments with increasing (M5) and decreasing (M6) rates are also presented to replicate local advance and retreat of depositional sedimentary systems (progradation and retrogradation respectively).

The diapir growth rate is continuous and constant throughout (0.023 mm/year).

Movie outputs begin at the start of the sedimentation stage after the diapir has generated surface topography (T=2.2 Myr). Sediment is added in three equal stages (S1-S3) of 0.8 Myr from 2.2 to 4.6 Myr, with four inputs per stage (0.2 Myr). The sedimentation rate is varied between 0.15 and 0.45 mm/year where the intermediate aggradation experiment (M3, sedimentation rate of 0.3 mm/year) is a reference model. For further explanation of input parameters and key observations specific to each modelled scenario see Cumberpatch ZA, Finch E, Kane IA, et al. 2021 (figures 2 and 9).

This collection includes movies for individual experiments and comparison between selected experiments.

They demonstrate a selected region focussed on the salt diapir (black). Layers representing early diapir stratigraphy are thicker and shown in cool colours and syn-kinematic layers are yellow/green. The final image of the movies highlights depositional stages.
