Supplementation Materials-Integrated assessment of Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation-derived postbiotics on performance and health of pre-weaning dairy calves
Listed in figshare

To ensure the healthy growth of pre-weaning dairy calves, antibiotics are often used for medical interventions.
Description
However, the widespread usage of antibiotics contributes to antimicrobial resistance such as E. coli and environmental contamination, driving the need for safe and effective alternatives to antibiotics, such as postbiotics. Existing research on Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation-derived postbiotics (SCFP) in calves has revealed a broad spectrum of physiological and performance-related responses.
Additionally, the growing volume of SCFP studies in recent years highlights the need for a more focused and comprehensive analysis. Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to comprehensively evaluate the effects of SCFP supplementation on the growth, intake, structural growth, blood parameters, rumen and intestinal morphology, and health indicators in dairy calves. A systematic search was conducted in Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, and Web of Science, which yielded 1,649 studies.

After screening, 17 eligible studies (1,330 calves in total) met PICO criteria were included. Participants were pre-weaning dairy calves, the intervention was SCFP, the comparison was feeding versus not feeding SCFP, and the outcomes were not limited, but the studies had to report the standard deviation (SD) or data from which the SD could be calculated. Data were extracted and analyzed using a three-level random-effects model that partitioned variance across the sampling, with-study, and between-study levels.
The results indicated that SCFP supplementation significantly improved overall growth (standardized mean difference (SMD) = 0.14, 95% CI [0.05, 0.24]), increasing average daily gain (ADG) (SMD = 0.19, 95% CI [0.02, 0.36]) and final body weight (FBW) (SMD = 0.22, 95% CI [0.04, 0.40]). Moderator analyses indicated that the beneficial effect of SCFP on the overall growth of pre-weaning dairy calves is influenced by the mode of SCFP supplementation, the type of liquid feed, and forage supplementation, and also exhibits regional differences.
SCFP supplementation also enhanced overall immune-inflammatory marker levels (SMD = 0.27, 95% CI [0.08, 0.46]) and intestinal morphology (SMD = 0.21, 95% CI [0.04, 0.37]). However, no significant effects were observed on blood metabolism, antioxidant capacity, or most ruminal parameters. In addition, mixed-effect analysis revealed a linear relationship between SCFP and both ADG and FBW of pre-weaning dairy calves.
An exploratory analysis identified total protein (TP) as the primary positive features associated with the improved ADG. Collectively, the available evidence indicates that SCFP supplementation is a promising nutritional strategy for improving growth performance in pre-weaning dairy calves, with benefits may be associated with immune-related responses and enhanced gastrointestinal development and morphology.
