Soil salinization is expanding in major rice-growing regions, yet its multigenerational effects on planthoppers via host plants remain unclear.

Description

We investigated how rice variety, NaCl concentration, and generational exposure influenced the fitness of the white-backed planthopper (WBPH), Sogatella furcifera (Horváth). In a preliminary screening experiment, four rice cultivars were grown under 0–100 mmol/L NaCl, and six fitness-related traits were measured in the F1 generation.

All the traits exhibited significant variety-by-concentration interactions. The fecundity of Yanfeng No. 47 remained stable (147.05 ± 7.47–188.29 ± 8.27 eggs/female) across the salinity gradient, whereas Liaoxing No. 1 strongly suppressed nymphal survival, which decreased to 40.00 ± 4.08% at 100 mmol/L. To test multigenerational effects, we further propagated WBPH on Liaoxing No. 1 under 100 mmol/L for three consecutive generations. multigenerational patterns were trait specific.

Nymphal survival recovered from an initial F1 decrease of 40.00 ± 4.08% to 73.75 ± 2.39–76.25 ± 4.27% in F2–F3, whereas fecundity decreased at the same concentration (from 48.09 ± 3.81 to 15.59 ± 0.59–16.75 ± 0.66 eggs/female). Adult longevity remained variety dependent and stable across generations. The macropterous ratio showed a nonsignificant numerical peak in F2 (68.57%; p > 0.05).

Overall, the effects of salt on the WBPH depended on the rice variety, salt concentration, and generation. These findings provide a basis for understanding WBPH population dynamics in saline rice fields and for developing management strategies in saline-alkaline agroecosystems.
