Description
File name; Fig 14.4, 14.12, GPDs, Wean vs female body mass (X2), 04 May 2026 OLD Filename = Fig 14.2, Fig 14.12, GPDs, Wean vs body mass, 02 May 2025 From this file I compare weaning vs (a) body mass during mating season for GPD fems that DID vs did NOT wean a litter (Fig 14.4) and (b) body mass at first juvenile emergence for GPD fems that DID vs did NOT wean a litter (Fig 14.12) OLD File name = GPDs, Wean vs fem wt, 1 datum per fem per year, 24 April 2022 On 24 April 2022, this file has now been checked TWO TIMES.
All data come also from checked files. This file started from File Name = GPDs, Body mass, VCNP, 03 April 2023 Notes for VCNP data: Note on 27 March 2023. On 30 April 2018 through 08 May 2018, I re-marked, weighed, and did ultrasounds for many GPDs.

These weights are NOT in the time period I will use for the chapter on body mass. So, I have NOT entered most of these GPDs in this file. Many of these weights are for GPD females in LATE PREGNANCY--JUST 1-2 DAYS BEFORE THE SCHEDULED DATE OF PARTURTION ON 29 DAYS AFTER THE DATE OF ESTRUS AND COPULATION.
Cases affected for 30 April 2018 through 08 May 2018 are 1333 through 1376. Note well: For all cases of 1333 through 1376, I do not use for any analyses. I DO record data from 30 April through 09 May from all males and many non-lac fems.
Hard copy of data for this file was compiled and summarized by research assistant who left to work on Lane's red squirrels. She checked hard copy ONE TIME, and I also checked hard copy ONE TIME ONLY. I do not use female weights if comments say either "Ultrasound" or "Do not use".
To check for sex, sort file BY SEX and look for any problems. Note on 15 April 2023. I find several 2018 body masses from data sheets from the field for which I collected information on body mass and fleas.
I add the information from these sheets to this file on 15 April 2023. All these new data from 2018. I do NOT use flea data in this file for any GPD analyses.
GPD flea analyses are in other files and chapters. Reprostatus = reproductive status. See next line.
Note on 17 April 2023. For females, Reprostatus 0 = No litter, and Reprostatus = 1 = weaned litter. I do not enter any information for males and females when Wt >=25 April and WT <= 15 May I only enter 0 or 1 when Wt >=16 May This entire file checked with Judy on 15-17 April 2023, and one time only by JLH alone on earlier date.
I will use this file for the following analyses: a) body mass in March-April for GPD females that DID wean a litter vs GPD females that did NOT wean a litter b) body mass in late May through July or GPD females that DID wean a litter vs GPD females that did NOT wean a litter For (a ) and (b), I used only one body mass for each time period per female, even though I sometimes had several body masses. Note on 20 April 2023: All flea counts are from May or June; Flea counts from March and April not shown here.
I do not use any flea counts from this EXCEL file for any analyses involving fleas. See OTHER EXCEL files. For many GPD females, I might have a weight from March or June, but I have NO INFORMATION on possible weaning.
Many of these latter females are NOT shown in this EXCEL file. Note on 22 April 2023: Marchwt of 457 for 82 (F61) in 2015 now deleted. Entered by error, I guess.
Note on 24 April 2024: This file has now been checked TWO TIMES. Notes for PEFO data: Date = 15 Sept 2020 File name = GPDs, Body masses for females that did and did NOT wean a litter, 15 Sept 2020 All data here from PEFO--no data from RMC or VCC Note on 14 Sept 2020: I must add data from RR3 (H53) from 1992. Easiest way: Fix case-698 Watch for possible confusion with case 699 (C14#2, U23, U24) For 64 (J87 goes to M21), year changed from to 1991 to 1992 on 13 Sept 2021.
This change for 64 will NOT change any statistical analyses. Watch for similar changes in other files. This file started with file = GPDs, PEFO bodywts from Julia Phillip, 10 Aug 2020 If we first marked a GPD of unknown age and it lived for >=4 years, I assigned an age of 3 for the third year and an age of 4 for the 4th year.
I did NOT assign an age for the first or second year. I will use NO DATA for survivorship from 1995 until later, because my last year of research at PEFO was 1995. SOME DATA from 1995 are here, but I will not use any of them.
In general I did not use any weights after 15 April in any year. In a few cases, however, I used data for a few days after 15 April. I did NOT use data from females that were obviously far along in pregnancy (e.g., med teats) or for any males that copulated.
I did use a few weights for a few nonbreeding yearling males and for a few females that were NOT far along in pregnancy (e.g., no teats, tiny teats, or small teats). Similarly, in general I did not use any weights before 15 May in an year. In a few cases, however, I use data a few days before 15 May.
I cannot figure out the identity of the dog with eartag = A48A in 1994. So I ignore this GPD. In 1994, I marked two GPD females with marker = 68.
For this EXCEL file, I call one 68#1 (Q1-Q3, Q2) ; and the other 68#2 (S75, S76) This file has been checked two times by JLH over week of 01 Sept 2020 for all variables except Repro status New entries for Repro status checked TWO TIMES on 15 Sept 2020 Note a few additions in RED that were not in earlier version of this file before I recorded Repro status These changes in red (N = 3) are also marked under comments with an asterisk (*) I included the change for ONE if the GPD females with an asterisk for my analysis of GPD female weight vs survivorship (GPD female-113, W37, W38), but NOT for other two because either (a) survivorship was in doubt (RAB, 142, T91?, T92?) or no weights were available (RAB, 629, 630) Reprostatus = 0 = female did NOT wean a litter Reprostatus = 1 = female DID wean a litter For this file I have body masses from the following two time periods (a) Wt <=25 April = just before, just after, or during the mating season, and (b) Wt >=16 May = just before, during, or just after the period when weanlings were first emerging from their natal nursery-burrows Litter size = litter size at first emergence of offspring from their natal nursery-burrow = number of weanlings.
Yearlings = number of weanlings that survive for >= 9 months after first emergence No data on yearlings in this EXCEL file. These data used for Figs 14.4 and 14.12 in Hoogland 2026--i.e., this EXCEL file used for two separate Figs in Hoogland 2026 This file ready for longterm storage on 02 May 2025. I considered data from the same prairie dog female in different years to be independent.
Wt <= 25 April = body mass from before or on 25 April = Body mass just before, during, or just after mating season WT >=16 May of body mass on or just after 16 May = Body mass just before, during, or just after first juvenile emergences Wt = body mass No teats = not visible teats TDF = teats tiny, dry, and flat = teats barely visible SDF = teats small, dry, and flat = teats visible but very small MDF = teats medium, dry, and flat = lost litter somewhere in mid-lactation LDF = teats long, dry, and flat = lost litter late in lactation Weanwt = body mass just before, at, or just after female's juveniles first appear aboveground Wt = weight = body mass in grams All weights are in GRAMS Rtear = right eartag Lftear = left eartag GPD fem marker = Nyanzol marker CV = closed vulva = closed vagina Empty cell = missing data GPD fem marker = SKain = GPD captured and marked by Susan Kain; no information for body mass File name; Fig 14.4, 14.12, GPDs, Wean vs female body mass (X2), 04 May 2026
