The Consolidation of the Provincial Aristocracy in Lincolnshire, from the later Stuart to the early Hanoverian period

This study addresses certain weaknesses in the historical literature on the English nobility within the county context during the 1660s to the 1720s.

Description

Existing research on the period has not fully analysed the depths of the nobility’s involvement and influence in provincial governance. The principal argument presented in this thesis is that the nobility performed an integrating role, and this was especially significant in Lincolnshire, where one noble family, the Berties of Grimsthorpe Castle, governed over the county throughout this period.

The nobility’s power in the county overcame challenges brought by both national and local events. This is explored in chapters investigating the era of growing monarchical absolutism, 1660-1688; the post-revolutionary era of William and Mary and the establishment of noble power, 1688-1702; and the age of aristocratic ascendancy, 1702-1725.

The thesis incorporates a wide range of source types: private correspondence, state papers, municipal records, pollbooks, and an array of published contemporary newspapers, pamphlets and books.

The research illuminates the distinctiveness of Lincolnshire, and the ways in which its nobility performed an important role. The thesis’ findings show that the county’s governance was more dynastic, remaining under the control of one family, a key dimension not evident in studies of other county studies.

Control was not ‘absolute’, as in the degree of electoral control, and related aristocratic factionalism across Lincolnshire’s constituencies.

However, there were various other prominent underpinnings and expressions of noble hegemony. Among the most striking was the level of noble influence in debates over land reclamation, and its bearing on county politics and community. Indeed, the research, forms a first-of-its-kind study.

It demonstrates the significance of complex environmental issues as a critical factor in the intersection between the nobility and county governance during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.
