TCN-BiLSTM-Attention: A Hybrid Neural Network Model for Atmospheric Propagation Delay Prediction Accounting for Nonlinear Time-Varying Characteristics

Listed in ScienceDB

Abstract—As radar signals propagate through the atmosphere, they are affected by tropospheric refraction and ionospheric dispersion, resulting in propagation delays that affect radar geolocation and remote sensing imaging accuracy.

Description

Zenith tropospheric delay (ZTD) and vertical total electron content (VTEC) are key parameters for describing atmospheric propagation delay. However, high-accuracy reference products are typically released with latency, which limits their use in near-real-time remote sensing applications.

To address the periodicity, short-term fluctuations, nonlinear time-varying behavior, and multi-factor drivers of ZTD and VTEC series, this paper proposes a TCN-BiLSTM-Attention model for atmospheric propagation delay parameter prediction. Historical delay sequences, periodic temporal factors, spatial location information, and external driving parameters are integrated as model inputs. Local temporal variation features are extracted, historical sequence dependencies are captured, and informative time steps are emphasized through the TCN, BiLSTM, and attention modules, respectively.

Experiments were conducted using ZTD and VTEC data from Hong Kong during 2021–2022. The proposed model achieved single-step prediction RMSEs of 4.793 mm and 0.561 TECU for ZTD and VTEC, respectively, representing reductions of 22.8% and 25.7% compared with LSTM. The 24-h recursive forecasting RMSEs were 48.321 mm and 2.001 TECU, respectively, indicating that the model can limit error accumulation under continuous forecasting conditions.

Further regional applicability experiments for ZTD were conducted in the North China Plain, the northwestern arid region, and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The corresponding RMSEs were 1.67 mm, 1.86 mm, and 0.71 mm, all lower than those of the UNB3m and GPT3w empirical models. These results suggest that the proposed model is applicable across different topographic and climatic settings.
