CCS Projections for krill

Listed in NOAA Oceanview

Euphusiids (krill) are highly abundant and serve as important prey for many marine organisms.

Description

There are two primary krill species in the California Current System (CCS): Thysanoessa spinifera (TSPIN) and Euphausia pacifica (EPAC). This dataset includes the projected abundance of total krill (EPAC, TSPIN, and all other species), represented as the log-transformed catch-per-unit-effort (ln(CPUE + 1)), using three high-resolution (~10 km) downscaled ocean projections under the Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 (RCP8.5).

Species distribution models (SDMs) were previously trained and validated using catch data from a midwater trawl conducted by NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center (a version of this model is described in Cimino et al. 2020). SDMs were fit using boosted regression trees (BRTs) and the environmental covariates were sourced from the ETOPO1 Global Relief Model (ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/global/global.html), with models trained on a hindcast period (1990-2010) across a domain of 30°-48°N, inshore of 134°W at 0.1° horizontal resolution.

The environmental predictor variables included static variables: bottom rugosity and distance from shore, and dynamic variables in May: surface eastward velocity, surface northward velocity, surface northward wind stress, stratification strength, isothermal layer depth, wind stress curl, and sea surface temperature. Krill predictions were made monthly from April to August. To force the projections, daily output from the three downscaled ocean projections for the CCS were used.

These downscaled projections are based on an implementation of the same 0.1° ROMS domain described above, with bias-corrected forcing obtained from three earth system models (ESMs) for the period from 1990 to 2100 under the RCP8.5 climate scenario (Pozo Buil et al., 2021). Downscaled ESMs were selected to span the range of plausible futures for the CCS, and belong to the phase 5 of the coupled model intercomparison project (CMIP5) archive: the geophysical fluid dynamics laboratory (GFDL) ESM2M, Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL) CM5A-MR and the Hadley Center HadGEM2-ES (HAD).
