All data supporting manuscript entitled "hydraulic strategy reversal: emergent trees heavily rely on shallow soil water in a tropical seasonal rainforest"
Listed in ScienceDB
This dataset contains ecohydrological and physiological measurements collected from two co-occurring tropical rainforest tree species, the emergent tree Parashorea chinensis and the canopy species Pometia pinnata, in a tropical seasonal rainforest in Xishuangbanna, Southwest China.
Description
The dataset was compiled to support a study examining seasonal water transport, water-source use, intrinsic water-use efficiency, and plant water status in relation to monsoon-driven variation in soil water availability.
This dataset includes five main data components. First, daily sap flow density and associated climatic variables were recorded, including precipitation, air temperature, relative humidity, vapor pressure deficit, photosynthetically active radiation, wind speed, and mean volumetric water content of the 0–40 cm soil layer. Second, soil water isotope data include hydrogen and oxygen isotope compositions across different soil depths.

Third, xylem water isotope data include hydrogen and oxygen isotope compositions for P. chinensis and P. pinnata across sampling months. Fourth, leaf carbon isotope data provide measurements of leaf δ¹³C for both species in the dry and wet seasons. Fifth, leaf water potential data include predawn and midday leaf water potentials for both species across seasons.
These data allow assessment of seasonal differences in sap flow, environmental controls on tree water transport, isotope-based plant water-source use, and interspecific differences in leaf-level water-use regulation. The dataset can be used to evaluate how emergent and canopy trees coordinate water uptake, hydraulic transport, carbon–water regulation, and plant water status under contrasting dry- and wet-season conditions in tropical seasonal rainforests.
