Questionnaire on the Relationship Between Narrative Competence and Occupational Burnout Among Chinese Medical Practitioners

Listed in ScienceDB

The data of this study were derived from a cross-sectional questionnaire survey targeting medical practitioners in China, aiming to explore the relationship between medical practitioners' narrative competence and occupational burnout.

Description

A structured self-administered questionnaire was adopted as the survey tool, which was distributed and collected via an online platform. Data collection was conducted from August 2024 to October 2024, and the participants were medical workers in Guangdong Province.

A total of 1,248 questionnaires were recovered. After rigorous data cleaning (excluding questionnaires with overly short completion time, obviously regular answers, and missing key variables), 1,049 valid questionnaires were included, with an effective recovery rate of 84.05%.The questionnaire consisted of three parts:(1) General Information Questionnaire: A self-designed questionnaire containing 15 items to investigate basic demographic and work characteristics, including gender, age, place of origin, professional title, department, educational background, marital status, working years, monthly income, average weekly working hours, average monthly night shifts, living conditions, work stress, familiarity with narrative medicine, and whether a narrative center has been established.(2) Narrative Behavior Competence Scale: Developed by Yang Xiaolin's research team to measure the narrative practice competence of Chinese medical practitioners.

The scale contains 38 items covering five dimensions: life and health (8 items), family connection (8 items), career development (9 items), peer communication (4 items), and doctor-patient interaction (9 items). A 4-point Likert scoring method was applied, with scores ranging from 1 to 4 corresponding to "strongly disagree" to "strongly agree". The total scale score is the sum of scores of all items, ranging from 38 to 152.(3) Maslach Burnout Inventory: Translated and revised by Chinese scholar Li Chaoping, consisting of 15 items categorized into three dimensions: emotional exhaustion (5 items), depersonalization (4 items), and reduced personal accomplishment (6 items).

Each item adopts a 7-point Likert scoring method, with scores from 0 to 6 representing "never" to "every day". The score of each dimension is calculated as the sum of item scores within the dimension divided by the number of items. The total occupational burnout score = emotional exhaustion × 0.4 + depersonalization × 0.3 + reduced personal accomplishment × 0.3.

Participants with a total score higher than 1.5 were defined as having occupational burnout; those with a total burnout score of 1.5 ≤ score < 3.5 were classified as mild-to-moderate burnout, and those with a score ≥ 3.5 were classified as severe burnout. The data of this study do not involve personal private information, and all identifiers have been desensitized. The data are of good quality and can be used for repeated analysis, secondary research or meta-analysis.
