Description
Study 1 (Age typicality assessment) aims to confirm the age specific expectations of workplace helping behavior and screen experimental materials for the subsequent two situational experiments. 120 working adults evaluated the age typicality of 42 workplace behaviors on a 7-point scale (1=fully consistent with the characteristics of young employees, 7=fully consistent with the characteristics of older employees). The data file contains typicality scores for each participant on 42 behaviors, the frequency of each participant engaging in various behaviors, as well as demographic information such as gender, age, education, and years of work experience.
Based on the evaluation results, two types of helping behaviors, "typical older employees" and "typical young employees", were selected as the manipulation materials for Study 2 and Study 3. Study 2, used to test the theoretical model of "helper age x helper type → perceived typicality → helper evaluation". 280 working adults were randomly assigned to a 2 (helper age: 28/48 years old) x 2 (helper type: guiding newcomers/carrying heavy objects) inter subject design, and read a workplace help scenario from the perspective of an observer before answering.

The data file contains experimental conditions (age of the helper, type of help), perceived typicality, a help evaluation operationalized with a single question "whether the help is appropriate", as well as manipulated checks and demographic information. Analyze with helper age as the independent variable and helper type as the moderating variable. Study 3: Conduct a more comprehensive examination of the theoretical model of Study 2 under the condition of replacing experimental materials and reducing the alternative explanation of "physical requirements". 300 working adults were randomly assigned to a study design with 2 participants (age of helper: 28/48 years old) x 2 participants (type of helper: writing professional recommendation letters/guiding digital office systems).
Both types of helpers were low physical and cognitive. The data file includes experimental conditions, perceived typicality (5 questions), assistance evaluation (5 questions, covering quality, satisfaction, effectiveness, value, and problem-solving), assistance favorability as a supplementary indicator (2 questions), age and physical manipulation tests, as well as demographic information such as gender, age, education, work experience, and weekly working hours.
Analyze with helper age as the independent variable and helper type as the moderating variable.
