Deze veteraan groeide op in Rotterdam, waar hij in de Tweede Wereldoorlog het bombardement meemaakte.
Description
Zijn grootvader werkte bij het Korps Mariniers en dat trok hem na de bevrijding ook wel. Hij nam deel aan de tweede politionele actie in Indië, waar hij eigenlijk niet achter stond.
Het materieel en de organisatie was erg amateuristisch, vond hij. Ze probeerden de lokale bevolking te ontzien in hun geweld. Bij thuiskomst in de haven werden ze uitgemaakt voor moordenaars, wat hem schokte.

Hij ging in Leiden studeren, waar hij de Hap van Jan tegenkwam. Terugkijkend heeft de inzet bij de mariniers hem gevormd in zijn jonge jaren, hij is dankbaar voor die ervaring.
