The agency conducted these national surveys of young Americans about major subjects usually taught in school in order to gather information that would aid educators, legislators and others in improving the educational experience.
Description
This series contains data from a continuing survey of the knowledge, skills and attitudes of American students ages 9, 13 and 17 and some young adults ages 26 to 35 in several learning areas. These include reading, writing, literature, mathematics, science, citi zenship / social studies, history, art, geography and some specialized topics.
NAEP data also includes school level information about region, census division, type and size of community, occupational mix of attendance area, grade range, racial composition, total enrollment and eligibility for federal funding. Respondent information includes age, sex, race, parents' education and reading materials in the home and background questions such as homework and television viewing habits, languages spoken in the home, racial / ethnic heritage and household possessions.

Beginning in 1990, the NAEP surveys also provide comparative state data for states that participate in selected assessments.
