COVID-19 Risk and Immunity in Montreal North: A Population based Study [RISC-MTL, study data contributed to the CITF Databank]

Listed in Borealis

Description

Background

Montréal-Nord, a densely populated, racially diverse, and economically disadvantaged borough of Montreal, has had one of the highest per capita COVID-19 infection rates since the start of the pandemic and, as of June 2021, a lower-than-average vaccination rate. Aims of the Study: This study aimed to 1) determine why Montréal-Nord residents face increased risks of contracting SARS-CoV-2; 2) assess the prevalence of infection and immunity in the neighbourhood, and 3) compare these findings with other Montreal neighborhoods to understand the role of individual and community characteristics in influencing infection and vaccination rates.

Methods

The RISC study is a two-phase, population-based case-control study that recruited participants aged 18 and older from Montréal-Nord and other Montreal neighborhoods. Data collection included online questionnaires to gather sociodemographic information, risk factors, and vaccination history, along with a self-administered dried blood test to detect COVID-19 antibodies, indicating previous infections or vaccine-acquired immunity.

A subsample of participants also participated in qualitative interviews to provide deeper insights. Contributed dataset contents: The datasets include 2,449 primary respondents who completed baseline surveys between August 2021 and November 2022. Questionnaire data for an additional 3,066 household members are included. 1,466 primary respondents (60%) gave one blood sample between September 2021 and August 2022 for analysis.

Variables include data in the following areas of information: demographics (age, gender, race-ethnicity and indigeneity, education, occupation, household composition), general health (smokes, chronic conditions, weight, health behaviours, flu vaccine), exposure risk factors (travel history, adherence to COVID-19 public health guidelines), COVID infection history (dates of positive rapid antigen or PCR tests, hospitalizations, symptoms), SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, and serology (IgG against SARS-CoV-2 RBD, nucleocapsid, and spike proteins).
