Much of this file comes from SYSTAT file = Utahpart.sys, which was checked TWO TIMES for following publication: Hoogland, J. L. 2013.
Description
Why do females mate with more than one male?: —Insights from longterm research. Journal of Mammalogy 94:731-744 Info added to this file on 09 March 2022.
See below. Females that were known to give birth sometimes were classified as either tiny or TDF in May or June. So, information on Parturition for this file might be unreliable unless the condition was either lac, MDF, or LDF. 29 May 2021: The following variables have been checked TWO TIMES: UPD, Eartag, Female body mass at <= 15 April Female body mass in May, Female age, Final age, Littersize, Yearling, Maxcop, Mincop Still to check: Parturition.
Read the rest (15 more)
I probably will NOT double check this variable--because often hard to quantify Fem body mass at <=15 April and Fem body mass in May were checked TWO TIMES with weights in Eartag summary sheets, all which were checked ONE TIME ONLY Fem body mass at <=15 April = body mass just before, during, or just after mating season Fem body mass in May = body mass just before, at, or just after female weaned her litter Femage = female's age in years since her first emergence from natal burrow-entrance For some UPDs in 2005, I have added an "x" to the eartag number-- to avoid confusion with UPDs in early years that had the same eartag number.
Duplicate eartags might have occurred with the following letters: A, C, F, H, Correction on 30 Sept 2021: Litter size of 5 added for HRS (C65) in 1998 (was missing data) Consider using THIS DATASET for completed analyses such as body mass vs litter size, body mass vs wean, body mass vs parturition, and so forth If an estrous female and a sexually active male went to bed TOGETHER AT THE SAME TIME, I scored that as a definite cop.
If they woke up together but did not go to bed together, I scored that as a possible cop under Maxcop, but NOT as a cop under Min cop. If they went to bed together at DIFFERENT TIMES, I scored that as s a possible cop under Maxcop, but NOT as a cop under Mincop. I score a 2-min BD as a good cop.
I do NOT score BDs of 0.5 min or 1 min as good cops. However, I score every ABOVEGROUND COP as a good cop--even if for only 30 sec 1st of 2 cops = 1 = data from first cop only for double-estrous females. I will EXCLUDE these cases (N = 3) from analyses of ARS and LRS.
I will INCLUDE these data for examination of polyandry When a male and an female woke up together on the day after the female's estrus but did NOT go to bed together at the same approximate time, I wonder how often they copulated… Note on 14 June: I must add 6SBS (P51) from 1999--No litter, No yearlings--see below for incorporation of these changes Note on 16 June 2021: Note change for 96 (R23) 2003. Yearlings now 5 instead of 2.
So, two changes for this file as of 16 June 2021. This file is also in Folder for chapter on Polyandry. I have NOT re-done the stats for this file for polyandry vs ARS of UPD females.
I will wait until I analyze stats for litter size and yearlings--to verify that information is correct. 6SBS (P51) from 1999--No litter, No yearlings. Added on 07 Sept 2021. 6SBS from 1999 is NOT in analysis completed on 30 May 2021 Change for 96 (R23) 2003 made sometime after May 2021. 96 from 1999 is NOT in analysis completed on 30 May 2021 Change for RAB (C11X) in 2005: Two cases were entered for this same dog. I have retained case #793, and I have removed all the key information from case #833.
Note these changes in early September 2021. They will affect the figures for UPDs, ARS for babies and UPDs, ARS for yearlings Note on 18 Nov 2021. Info on microsats = microsatellites from Steve Keller is often ambiguous.
So, I will NOT use microsats to revise any of the information in this file on Litter size or Yearlings On 13 Dec 2021 I discover possible 4th sexual partner for 52 (N57) in 2003. BUT NO, as explained above. On day of estrus, 52 definitely went to bed with male-0 into T13.
On day after estrus, she woke up at 5V, and R27 MIGHT have awakened at 5V as well. I scored cop for male-0 and two other males, but I do NOT score copulation with R27. On 16 Dec 2021, I discover 3rd sexual partner for BB7 (C37) in 1997--NO, as explained above Male-99 had a POSSIBLE WAKEUP with BB7 on morning after cop.
I score this possible wakeup for MAXCOP for BB7, BUT NOT FOR MINCOP for BB7 Note on 09 March 2022: Changes for 6SBS (P51) in 1999 and 96 (R23) in 2003 do NOT affect my analysis of polyandry vs littsize or yearling--because I did not document copulations for either 6SBS (P51) in 1999 for 96 (R23) in 2003 I HAVE incorporated the changes for RAB (C11X) in 2005 For 52 (N57) in 2003, I score 3 Mincops and 4 Maxcops. For BB7 (C37) in 1997, I score 2 Mincops and 3 Maxcops.
For RAB (C11X) in 2005, I have only ONE ENTRY of 1 Mincop and 1 Maxcop. This same file is also in folder with ARS and LRS For Figures 19.4, 19.7, and 19.10 in Hoogland 2026, I will use MINCOP instead of Maxcop UPD = Nyanzol marker for UPD female Maxcop = Maximum number of possible sexual partners, which includes dubious partners--not used for Fig 19.4, 19.7, or 19.10. Mincop = Minimun number of possible sexual partners, with EXCLUSION of dubious cases Litter size = litter size at first emergence of offspring from their natal nursery-burrow = number of weanlings.
Yearlings = number of weanlings that survive for >= 9 months after first emergence Lac = lactating = long, turgid nipples TDF = teats are Tiny, Dry, and Flat—so that female did not give birth or lost her offspring soon after parturition MDF = teats are Medium, Dry, and Flat—so female gave birth but lost her offspring at 1-2 weeks after parturition LDF = teats are Long, Dry, and Flat—so female gave birth but lost her offspring in late lactation No Teats = no evidence for teats = female that did not copulate or (probably) did not conceive after copulation OR = Original resident in first year of research (1995) at UPD Horse Corral Colony (HCC) at Bryce Canyon National Park I never knew the exact age for any Original Resident or for any immigrant into HCC from a different colony.
Almost all data in this EXCEL file from HCC, but a few cases are from the Lower Horse colony (LH or LHC) The Lower Horse Colony was about 0.5 kilometers from the Horse Corral Colony Fem body mass in May = body mass just before, during, or just after first juvenile emergences Parturition = 0 = no parturition Parturition = blank or <.> = no information on parturition Parturition = 1 = parturition did occur, with no information in THIS file on date of parturition These data used for Figs 19.4, 19.7, and 19.10 in Hoogland 2026.
This file ready for longterm storage on 01 April 2025. info = information Mixing occurred when juveniles from litter began to mix and mingle with juveniles from another litter before I could capture, eartag, and mark all juveniles from both litters. When Mixing occurred, I often was not assign accurate maternities or exact sibships. File name = Figs 19.4, 19.7, 19.10, UPDs, Polyandry, Polyandry vs yearlings, 29 June 2026
