Visual processing of PowerPoint slides during simultaneous interpreting

During simultaneous interpreting (SI), interpreters normally make use of different visual input and integrate it with the auditory input, i.e., the speech.
Description
Among the visual input SI interpreters engage with, this study focused on slides because they are frequently used as a visual medium to facilitate communication in various settings. The efficacy of slides depends on the slide design techniques adopted.
Thus, the present study investigated how slides using different design techniques facilitate or hinder interpreting, in hopes of offering inspirations for interpreter-friendly slide design. By triangulating eye-tracking data, interpreting output, and retrospective interview data, this study aimed to understand how interpreters process visual information on slides and how slide design techniques influence interpreters’ visual processing.<br><br><i>Thesis is embargoed until 31 July 2028.</i>
