Files Relating to the Effects of Underwater Habitation on Human Aquanauts

Listed in Harvard Dataverse

The agency used this study to simulate the environment of astronauts on extended space missions and evaluate their experiences.

Description

This series contains data from biomedical measurements, behavioral observations, and habitat technology measurements for four marine scientists, or aquanauts, who spent sixty days in an underwater habitat located fifty feet below the surface of Lamshur Bay off St. John's Island, Virgin Islands National Park under conditions similar to those experienced by astronau ts.

The biomedical records relate to two distinct measures: an assessment of general health quality made every two days, including pulmonary and respiratory data, blood samples, vital signs, and electrocardiographic and electroencephalographic readings, and a description of medically interesting or important occurrences and their treatment. The behavioral records include the location of each aquanaut, each movement, each dive, amount of food consumed, food preferences, sleep habits, and self evaluation of mood and outlook.

The habitat technology records evaluate the environment of the aquanauts and include a survey of ambient temperature, humidity, noise, and light; records of alarms, drills, emergencies, and repairs; and readings of pressure gauges within the habitat and on the surface. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC). See the ARC catalog entry for this series for more information on this data and how to order it.
